Georgia Voter Registration

FairVote2020 has developed interactive maps showing extensive constituency information on African-American voters in Georgia. The maps below include Unregistered African-Americans in Georgia and a geocode map (Map 18) showing 1.4 million registered voters (all races) who did not vote in the 2000 presidential election.

Map 25 shows the 2004 precinct level count of registered African-Americans as a percentage of all registered voters. Map 26 shows Bush-Kerry results by precinct and is also available as a KMZ file for viewing in Google Earth.

Zoom in on the map by clicking on the button at the top and then on the map. Change maps by clicking the drop-down menu under "Compare Maps" to the left of the map image window.

For political/voting maps, the congressional lines in effect for the 2006 election can be displayed by checking "Congress GA", then click "Redraw" . The current 109th congressional lines are displayed in maps 23 and 24. The final two maps show party affiliation for the General Assembly (2005).

Below links to those maps you will find links to maps in Adobe format which are also "zoomable." The Adobe maps include unregistered African Americans by county and maps showing precinct details for unregistered African Americans in municipalities with population over 15,000. More detailed street-level Adobe maps are available for 675 precincts statewide where 40% or more of the voting age population is African American, with an estimated 50 or more African Americans of voting age who are unregistered.

Georgia Photo ID Travel Distance Mapper (allow a few seconds to load the Google map))

You can calculate the distance from any address to a Georgia Driver Services office. Click on a balloon marker, enter the address, and a Google map will pop up with the time/distance calculated. When you click through to the FairData census map, you see the distribution of households without vehicles for the area defined in the Google map.

The point, of course, is to show that many people without cars in rural towns and the inner city would have a long way to travel to get a photo ID.

At a scale of about 20 miles, the number of unregistered African Americans (by 2002 precinct) is displayed in purple boxes. When you click on ZOOM TO and then click on the map -- voter registration and demographic data for the precinct selected will appear in a table below the map. Click on INFO and then click on the map for more detailed data.

Map 19 -- Registered voters who did not vote in the 2000 presidential general election

Registered voters (all races) color-coded by race. Thematic aggregation is at the precinct-level. The dots represent registered voters who did not vote in the 2000 presidential general election (some of whom were not registered at the time) About one-third of the non-voters are African-American -- approximately 500,000 persons.

The map plots households by address, so the dots may represent more than one person. Apartment complexes with the same street address are represented by a single dot. Student dorms are not shown. Data is incomplete or missing for several South Georgia counties. About 8.7% of the statewide registered nonvoter list is excluded from the map because the nonvoters could not be geocoded. to the street level.

This map shows about 675 precincts statewide - where more than 40% of the voting age population is African American, with an estimated 50 or more unregistered African Americans. There are about 400,000 unregistered African Americans in these precincts.

Street-level printer-ready detail maps can be downloaded by clicking on the INFO button and then on the precinct of interest. Next select "Focus Precincts" and select the Adobe map link from the lower half of the pop-up window. The block-level estimates in these maps are based on a geocoded voter list. Approximately 92% of African Americans registered to vote statewide were geocoded. Most of the remainder live in rural areas where address matching is more problematic.

Unregistered African Americans in 2002 by 2002 Precinct

Each map displays an area approximately 15 miles wide. About two-thirds of the state's African American population lives in the areas shown on these maps. Additional areas uploaded on request.

These maps can be used for orientation purposes with the "focus precinct" block-level maps below. The numbers displayed in purple boxes show unregistered or inactive voters and will match the unregistered voter count in the footer portion of the block-level "focus precinct" maps.
